Pope overhauls ‘Our Father’ prayer

ROME – The world famous Christian prayer Our Father will change its text at the Italian masses from next Sunday, November 29. At Easter next year, the new text will even be made compulsory in all Italian parishes.

Pope Francis believes that the translation used so far is incorrect and does not do justice to the original intention as stated in the Biblical-Greek text of the Gospel according to Matthew (6:13).

Temptation

The famous phrase “do not lead us into temptation,” according to the Pope, is incorrect. God does not want to lead people into temptation at all. On the contrary, God helps you to find the right path again. The translation should therefore be changed, according to the Pope, to “Let us not fall into temptation (or temptation).” The believer asks God in prayer not to be abandoned when he or she is tempted and to help him or her against it.

The Pope had previously criticized the old translation of the text, such as in December 2017. He also said that in his opinion the text of the prayer should be changed worldwide. The Pope will not want to limit the introduction to Italian parishes.
