In a series of tweets marking the anniversary of J.B Danquah’s death in Nsawam, the president said so long as Ghana lives, J.B Danquah’s name will live too, as it was he who proposed the name Ghana for this country.

Dr J.B Danquah was imprisoned without trial by his ‘rival’ Kwame Nkrumah on suspicion of subversive activities to bring down the then CPP government led by Dr Nkrumah. He died in Prison, sick, weak, and chained in his cell room.

President Akufo-Addo expressed regret that J.B Danquah died under “ignominious conditions” at the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons chained to the wall in detention in a cell reserved for convicted criminals.

“54 years ago today, one of the most extraordinary persons that Ghana has ever given to the world, J.B. Danquah, died at the Nsawam Medium Security prisons under the most ignominious conditions, chained to the wall in detention without trial in a cell for condemned convicts.” he tweeted.

“He had led a most public life, he wrote profusely, was not shy of arguments, and gave our nation its name of Ghana. I believe I will not overreach myself when I say that Danquah’s memory will continue to live, at least, for as long as this nation Ghana lives.” He added.

The president offered a prayer for his Uncle’s soul..

“May His Soul continue to rest and abide in the bosom of the Almighty until the last day of the Resurrection when we shall all meet again. Amen. #JBDanquah”
