President Nana Akufo-Addo has been conferred a chieftaincy title: ‘Nana Agbudani’ during the coronation of the new Ya Na, Abubakari Mahama.
The title is in recognition of the role he played in bringing lasting peace to Dagbon.
“Mr President there is news going round that your name has been changed to Nana Agbudani Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo because you’ve done what no could do and your name is going to be in the Guinness book of records for that,” the announcer stated.
After decades of a protracted chieftaincy dispute between the Andani and the Abudu Royal gates in the Dagbon Traditional Area, the path is now clear for a peaceful process that could lead to the enskinment of a new Ya Na in the area.
In an unprecedented move after the assassination of Ya Na Yakubu Andani ll on March 27, 2002, three Eminent Chiefs, led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu ll, presented a road map which spells out the processes agreed to by both Andanis and Abudus to the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, at the Jubilee House in Accra.
Today’s coronation of the new Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari II is the result of years of collaborative engagements by successive governments, the two Royal Gates of Dagbon and the Committee of Eminent Persons chaired by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and President Akufo-Addo.
The President can smile today because it has not been an easy journey to broker peace between the Abudus and Andanis who have shed blood for 17 years over the bitter chieftaincy dispute.
