President John Dramani Mahama has formed a seven-member planning committee to prepare for the much-anticipated National Economic Dialogue (NED).
This initiative is a key component of the President’s 120-day social contract with Ghanaians, aimed at addressing the country’s pressing development challenges.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Acting Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Sunday, January 26, 2025.
“In fulfilment of his promise to convene a National Economic Dialogue as part of his 120-day Social Contract with Ghanaians, President John Dramani Mahama has set up a seven-member National Economic Dialogue Planning Committee chaired by Dr. Ishmael Yamson.
“The members are Dr. K.Y. Amoako, Professor John Gatsi, Mohammed Samara, Nelly Mireku, Anthony Sarpong, and Ernest De-Graft Egyir,” part of the statement read.
It further indicated that the experts will deliberate on Ghana’s development challenges and chart a course toward sustainable economic growth.
“The National Economic Dialogue (NED) will offer a platform for dialogue and consultation on the country’s pressing development challenges. It will also discuss policy trade-offs and build consensus on reforms needed to transform Ghana into a high-growth, inclusive, and resilient economy,” it noted.
It stated that the Planning Committee has been allotted a period of four weeks to submit a comprehensive report outlining the critical preparatory activities.
“The Planning Committee has four weeks to submit a detailed report covering essential preparatory activities. These include setting the agenda, coordinating speakers and panelists from fields such as economics, energy, and agriculture, and managing logistical arrangements. The team will also oversee session facilitation, including panel discussions and breakout workshops, and will document the proceedings to produce a comprehensive report with actionable policy recommendations,” the statement read.
In addition to these responsibilities, the committee has been tasked with designing and implementing a communication strategy to promote widespread participation and transparency.
