A woman who was registered in The Hague has wrongly received social assistance benefits for single people for years. She fell through the cracks because of the low water consumption in her home and a freezer full of products that were already thirteen years past their expiration date. The judge has now decided that the woman must repay the tens of thousands of euros.
The woman was registered at an address in The Hague, but she did not actually live there, according to the municipality. After an anonymous tip, the social investigation department requested the woman’s water consumption from Dunea and this turned out to be extremely low. For example, the woman had consumed 7000 liters of water in three years. An average Dutch person uses 141 liters per day, so that would consume in about fifty days.
Her home also looked like a warehouse where people could not live. The rooms in the house bulged and blocked, among other things, the toilet. There were also products in the freezer that were already 13 years past their expiration date and in the broken refrigerator everything was well past their expiration date.
At home with ex-partner
According to the woman, her home was so neglected because she had a bad relationship with the landlord. In reality, the woman turned out to spend almost all her time in Spijkenisse with her ex-partner in the house, where their son also lives. According to her, her ex would not allow her child to stay with her in The Hague.
But because the woman does not use the address in The Hague as her main residence, she is not entitled to social assistance benefits for singles, according to the court. She must therefore now repay the overpaid social assistance and energy allowances. It concerns an amount of 50,460.76 euros
